You never know when a thief can strike lurking around your home and waiting for the perfect opportunity to relieve you of your valuables. That's why today we've put together an excellent list of home security life hacks to protect you and your family. Let's get sneaky in the event that a criminal manages to bypass your security you can still make it hard on them by concealing your expensive items. One excellent method is to create a fake and boring bookshelf display to do this we'll take three old binders and turn them into the perfect hiding spot. You'll start by cutting off one side of a binder while leaving a small tab hanging off for later a cutting board or scissors should do the job just fine. Then cut both sides off of the second binder again leaving tabs this is going to serve as our centerpiece which will bind the others together once you have everything done take some glue and reinforce the plastic and cardboard so that nothing is going to slip out of place and then line the binder tabs up together so that the flush now glue them together holding each tab in place as you go to form a strong bond once all the binders are connected and secured place them on your bookshelf and you can hide small but expensive items within the treasure cave you just built. This makes for an inconspicuous hiding place that most thieves will pass right by without a second thought speaking of your nice equipment another common mistake that can be made is placing empty boxes of your items near or around the trash bins. This is sort of like advertising what awesome things you have stored inside your house. So spend a little extra time breaking down the boxes and hiding them away in a bag or a bin. It's a combination of all the small things that really make a difference, did you know that 40% of people using your bathroom will snoop in your medicine cabinet if you don't have a lock. Here's a fun way to incite shame upon any snooping houseguest get yourself one of those musical or singing greeting cards we grab the most annoying one we could find to make sure it leaves a mark this will make for a great trigger to let you know when your medicine cabinet is being snooped. Carefully open the card and reveal its inner workings what you'll find inside is a small speaker a circuit board and a tab which initiates the sound as you can see the tab prevents the circuit from completing and when pulled allows the sound to burst out snip the tab at the end connected to the card and put it aside. Now peel the board and speaker from the paper as well make sure to do this slowly so you don't disconnect any wires or snare the board now head over to your medicine cabinet and place some adhesive on the inside to hold the board and speaker in place while making sure that the trigger is facing out. Once you have that secured and in place push the tab back into the trigger and put some tape on the end they're going to close the cabinet a bit and attach the tab to the door. While still keeping it wind up with the circuit board close the door and your cabinet is armed and now any sneaky person looking for your personal belongings will be met with surprise and most likely shame when leaving your house. At night it's always good to leave a light or two on so it looks like someone's home. However that might not always be enough but how do you fend off burglars aside from leaving your eight-year-old son home alone while you and the rest of the family take a trip to Paris? Simple cardboard cutouts grab an old box and flatten it out on the floor have someone lay down on top of it and trace around their torso and head with a pen or marker. Now it doesn't need to be perfect it just needs to resemble a human shape. Once you have it traced go ahead and cut it out with some scissor and place it in your windowsill flip on a light in the room and have a fun evening out knowing that your cardboard sentry is hard at work. Burglars are less likely to enter home when they believe an animal could expose them or even injure them. A simple and effective layer of extra home security can be obtained with a simple sign letting potential intruders know what might be in store. You can find pre-made graphics online to print out on your own or simply grab a cheap plastic version at any hardware store. Next time you're outside doing housework make sure not to leave any items out that give thieves easy access to your home like this ladder. But you also want to secure your entry points some window locks can be pried open from the outside with ease. While a broken window is always a possibility it's less likely because it will attract attention the simple security tactic is to measure out your window frame and create a perfectly sized rod to hold the window in place. Whether it's locked or not get a long piece of wood and cut it to size you can also try using adjustable curtain rods just place the stopper in the window for an extra level of protection besides a simple lock. If a thief once in your home you certainly don't want to make it easier so secure those easy access windows in block them up. Another obvious but quick tip is to have motion lighting around entryways to your house these will save you good money in the long run since you won't have to keep them turn on all the time and not to mention the surprise factor that comes from the immediate flash of light which serves as a great theft deterrent. These are all great ways to secure your home but if you want to take it to the next level check out smart door lock the 2nd Generation August Smart Lock is an excellent addition to your home security. comes with a smart key and renders the need to remember any pins or codes unnecessary. You can also add a camera like the smart cam HD Pro and set it to record when certain things happen like motion or door opening. So now if someone's on your front porch simple notification will let you know and even send a video clip through the smart home monitor it's quite useful if you're expecting a package or just want a record of who comes by your house.

The future is now. Welcome to Collsmith.weebly.com, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Future Technologies That May Change the World. For this list, we’re taking a look at the most cutting-edge technologies and innovations that could change the way we live on our little blue planet. 10. Sound Disrupters for Firefighting George Mason University engineering students Seth Robertson and Viet Tran may have drastically altered the future of fighting fire. They’ve developed a sonic fire extinguisher that moves the air at frequencies between 30 and 60 hz, which interrupts oxidization at the core of a fire. Basically, it separates the fuel from the oxygen, and as everyone who has ever tried to get a campfire going knows, you need those things to be working in tandem if you want to get a flame going. They’ve had success thus far on alcohol-based fires, but if they get it to work on other fuels (like wood or oil) it could provide a cheaper, cleaner, and more efficient way to battle blazes. 9. Hyperloop This is another brainwave from Elon Musk and Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (better known as SpaceX) that hopes to improve, and ultimately change the face of, transportation. The design is surprisingly elegant in its simplicity: they’re specifically designed “pods” or “capsules,” upheld in a near vacuum and floating on 0.05 inches of pressurized air, that are then sent at high-speeds through a steel tube. While it does sound a tad claustrophobic, these passenger capsules would travel at an average speed of approximately 600mph, with potential max speeds of up to 760mph. Energy efficient and wicked fast, it could change the way people get from place to place forever. 8. Transhumanism More of an intellectual movement than an invention, transhumanism is the belief that humans can still evolve – it’s that final evolution linking our minds and bodies with advanced technology. A subject that’s been popularized by sci-fi films and books for years – and in fact the term “transhumanism” was coined by Julian Huxley, the brother of “Brave New World” author Aldous Huxley – the idea is to ultimately bring forth a “post-human” state of being. While the concept is unnerving at best to many, for those who embrace the idea there has never been a more exciting time to be alive – even if that life may be linked to a hard drive. 7. The EM Drive This is the name given to the design of a method of advanced space propulsion technology. Also known as a radio frequency (or RF) resonant cavity thruster, this electromagnetic thruster uses pent-up electromagnetic radiation to achieve impetus and momentum without discharging propellant. If this sounds a little confusing don’t worry, it does basically defy the laws of physics. The conservation of momentum, implied in Newton’s laws of motion, says it should be impossible – and therefore there are many skeptical scientists, who’ve given it the nickname the “Impossible Drive.” However, if they do get it to work it would completely change how we could lift off, making space exploration – and defense missions – that much simpler. 6. SmartThings Samsung bought the company back in 2014, and the concept is basically in the name. The idea is to produce smart homes using an open platform wherein your appliances and devices all interact with one another. You know, like in The Jetsons, or maybe that Treehouse of Horror XII episode. Using the “Internet of Things,” the system would work on a hub connected straight into the house’s internet router, connecting devices to one another via the cloud. Companionable “things” could consist of: locks, lights, electrical outlets, motion sensors, speakers, moisture sensors and thermostats. Like most innovations that lurk on the border of sci-fi and reality, this sounds like it could either be amazing, or a hacker’s paradise. Maybe both. 5. Driverless Cars Already being tested by Google and Tesla Motors, this innovation could change everything from the way people are employed to the way we interact to the layout of cities; it could even spell the end of the auto industry altogether. The deal with driverless – or autonomous - cars is not that you’ll own one – but that NO ONE will own one. Already, fewer and fewer people are choosing to purchase cars, an expensive investment that’s only used on average 5% of the time, according to transportation adviser Paul Barter. More people are opting for ride-share groups, like Uber – and that’s where a driver starts to become redundant. Basically, think of a world of Johnny Cabs: fewer cars, less pollution, narrowing roads, more public space. 4. Electric Cars Even if you don’t believe in man-made climate change, everyone can probably agree that wasteful and non-renewable fuels are virtually unnecessary these days. People have been trying to get electric cars running for practically as long as cars have existed, but so far they have been hindered by the distances they can travel, speed, and a lack of charging stations. But with the rise of companies like Tesla Motors, those issues are falling by the wayside as we begin to change the way we think about driving. Tesla isn’t the only group developing these newer cars – which as of 2016 are equipped with self-driving hardware – but they’ve definitely hit the fast lane. 3. Virtual Reality Like the electric car, scientists have been trying to get virtual reality, or VR, technology off the ground for a long time. VR can refer to basically any immersive software that simulates real sights, sounds, and experiences. While the 2010s saw it being marketed as a way to give gamers a more full-on experience, the technology is being explored for application in many other areas, such as engineering, military training, archeology, phobia treatments and therapy, and film. With augmented reality quickly becoming an actual reality, this technology will eventually change not only how we see the world, but also how we interact with it. 2. Artificial Intelligence / Robots with Personalities This is perhaps the most highly criticized technology on this list, and the one most likely to make people wary: Artificial Intelligence. Many years of cinema have taught us that it can go one of two ways: it could be incredible, or incredibly horrifying. While proponents of A.I. development argue that it will help people in many tasks, the development of machines with a human – or greater – level of intelligence has raised a lot of philosophical as well as ethical debates. From the risk of putting humans out of jobs to general safety to the moral ramifications of creating something sentient purely for servile work, the discussion is sure to be a long one, and will surely shape our future. 1. 3D Printing We’ve all seen the videos of those little objects whizzed into existence. No big deal, right? While it is obviously in its infancy now, the ability to produce items through additive manufacturing could drastically change how we live. What if you could print out your own replacement car parts? Tools? Household items? Reproduce priceless pieces of art? Functional weapons? Medical devices? Its impact on globalization and manufacturing sectors worldwide, along with its potential to deeply affect routine labor and capital markets, shouldn’t be underestimated. It could also be great, leading to a resurgence of small manufacturing companies. While the social and financial impacts are difficult to predict at this point, 3D printing could be the biggest, most innocuous innovation since the printing press. We’ve always dreamed of having them but it seems to have taken the technology some time to… get off the ground. Welcome to Collsmith.weebly.com Top 5 Facts about hoverboads. In this instalment we're counting down the five most gravitating hoverboard facts. For this video, we’re including facts about both the science-fiction hoverboards and those nifty self-balancing scooters that seem hell-bent on killing us all. Yeah, we know they don’t actually hover, and yeah, we’re pissed off that they’re nevertheless called hoverboards too. But what’re you gonna do? 5. This Priest Hovered into Trouble A Catholic priest in the Philippines decided to add a little flair to Christmas Eve by performing his service on a hoverboard Segway. They say you’ll never get bored with a hoverboard, and this audience certainly wasn’t, but the other church representatives had a much different opinion. Father Albert San Jose found himself suspended for his stunt on grounds that he was “Capriciously introducing something to get the attention of the people” and was overall disrespectful. Silly padre, people aren’t supposed to enjoy being in church! 4. These Boards are Getting Hoverbanned Hoverboard owners may be excited to hop on their new toy and show the world, but they might be hard pressed to find somewhere to do so. Several major cities in the US have begun banning the use of hoverboards in public spaces. This means places like universities and shopping malls are a no-go. Even Wiz Khalifa was restrained for riding one in at Los Angeles International Airport. The NYPD have pretty much declared war on the things, and laws in the UK have outright banned hoverboards on roads, sidewalks, and other public spaces, as they’re considered “Personal Transportation”. So if you want to get some use out of your board, you might want to start by clearing up the basement. And maybe buying a fire extinguisher, because… 3. They Seem to Catch on Fire It’s no secret that hoverboards have been responsible for a long series of public injuries. But it seems poor piloting might not be the only hazards these little death traps can offer. Reports of faulty hoverboards bursting into flames in people’s homes have begun to surface. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission there are already at least 40 reports of hoverboards igniting, most often whilst charging. It’s said that these incidents are likely caused by lithium ion batteries overheating in some of the cheaper hoverboard models. As a result, Amazon has pulled many of their products off the website, and offered a refund on those already purchased. 2. Magnets Could Make Your Dreams Come True Alright, time for the good stuff: hoverboards that actually hover. The Japanese car company, Lexus, have created a hoverboard that actually levitates. The board functions by harnessing the powers of “magnetic levitation”, meaning it’s packed with magnets, superconductors, and liquid nitrogen. The main limitation here, however, is that these boards can only be used on magnetic tracks, and so far can only reach about an inch or two off the ground, so don’t expect to outrun any thugs. Unfortunately, Lexus has no plans to make these a commercial product so you might just have to stick to traditional skateboards for now. Womp womp. 1. Fans of Hovering Need Fans to Hover All hope is not yet lost, as the aerospace company ‘ARCA Space’ has invented a board might just make life worth living. Christened ‘The ArcaBoard’, this hoverboard is electrically powered by a series of miniature fans able to carry up to 240 lbs in weight. Sure fans may not sound as cool as “hover conversion”, or even “quantum locking” but at least this one can actually fly. The ArcaBoard–also known (by me) as the Wind Whizzer, the Blow Box, and the Fly Pad, has been tested to reach up to 30 cm. Although, with a shelf price of almost $20,000 and only enough battery power for 6 minutes of flight, this board may not completely deliver on the promise of the future, but at least it’s a glide in the right direction. |
